The Project Brief
Assignment: The impact of the START Facility program under UNCDF on small and medium enterprises in Northern Uganda.
About the Client
The Support to Agricultural Revitalization & Transformation (START) is a blended finance facility providing a range of business development services — from finance structures like loans and project development to technical assistance grants and partial credit guarantees. This is aimed at promoting growth and job creation by investing in fully integrated and sustainable agribusiness SMEs that create and retain wealth within Uganda. The program is implemented by the United Nations Capital Development Fund (UNCDF) in partnership with Private Sector Foundation Uganda (PSFU) and Uganda Development Bank Ltd (UDB).
Work Done
As Mara Mambo Media, we were charged with documenting the impact the program has had on SMEs in Northern Uganda. This was done on the ground, by interviewing 13 enterprises that have benefited from the program.
The interviews took the format of both videography and photography, with the interviewees clearly detailing how they have benefitted from the program (in line with the work of START) as individuals and as a community. The field interviews also aimed to understand the participants’ perception of the program, and were carried out in selected districts where the facility has been implemented:
- Adonyo Ltd — Gulu District (milled rice)
- Agali Farmers’ Cooperative — Lira District
- Amolatar Agro-Produce Company — Amolatar District
- Lira Magoya Investments Ltd — Gulu District (cassava)
- Moyo Mini Price Investment Ltd — Moyo District
- Stella Keitirima Enterprises Ltd — Gulu District
- Sunrise Agro Processing and Farming Ltd — Lira District
- Tick Feeders
- Tropical Honey Limited
- UGP Traders — agribusiness in the Karamoja region
- USUK Homelands Limited — Katakwi District
- Waribe Ltd — Gulu District
- ZODFA — beekeeping and honey processing
Results
As a result, we produced 13 testimonial videos and 51 edited photos that were shared with the client. The information obtained, we believe, was a perfect reflection of the tangible economic and social benefits derived from the program, which in turn will guide the client in their work in future. This data also places the START Facility as a credible and transformative initiative within the agricultural sector, as the success stories and testimonials enhance the program’s visibility.
